Dwight C. Doxsee, 72, passed away Tuesday doing what he loved, navigating the waters off Marco Island, looking for a good catch on a crisp, clear day. Dwight Doxsee follows his father, Ralph Doxsee, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 94.

Leslie Jureit passes away silently
Although in a lot of pain, up to the bitter end Leslie Juriet fought her battle with breast cancer. She lost that battle on Feb. 5 this year. Juriet and Cindy Mueller were co-owners and operators of Center Stage Productions, a company that every January produced different plays and musicals for the Marco Players.

Special tribute: Gil Nordell — part of the Island’s history
When Gil Nordell came to Marco Island, he was 50 years old. Gil had been born and raised in Minnesota, and with the monumental age of 50, Gil felt that it was time to find Florida. The year was 1965, the Deltona Corporation was well under way with the development of Marco Island, and when Nordell drove his brand new Cadillac over the Goodland Bridge, he found a new home, new family and friends, and a new career that would span the following 43 years.

Benedicte Traberg Smith, widow of broadcast journalist Howard K. Smith, dies at 87
My 87-year-old mother, Benedicte "Bennie" Traberg Smith, widow of pioneering broadcast journalist Howard K. Smith, has died at her beach side condominium on Marco Island, Florida. She passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 from complications from hydrocephalus. A longtime resident of Bethesda, Maryland, my mother had been living full-time on Marco for the past six years.

Island community loses a father, fisherman
The Island community is mourning the loss of father and fisherman, Joseph Nugent, 39, of 360 Capri Boulevard, Isles of Capri. Nugent died Thursday when he lost control of his motorcycle near 1400 19th St. S.W., Golden Gate Estates, according to Collier County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Physician Mitchell Jerome Shaw, 38, was last seen by his family on Christmas day and found dead in his Naples’ physicians’ office Saturday, reported Karie Partington, a spokeswoman with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

Phoebe Maria Magee, 7, passed away in her Island home Sunday after suffering a long term illness. Visitation was held Tuesday morning at Hodges-Josberger Funeral Home on Elkcam Circle and funeral mass is 12 p.m. Wednesday at San Marco Catholic Church.

Marco community’s support inspires Hope
Michelle Jackman, 37, of Marco Island, died just days before a benefit for her and her family was to be held at the Iron Rhino Saloon.
Ruthann DeJong, of Naples, worked with Jackman at the Snook Inn for several years. DeJong said while Jackman was living with the struggle of breast cancer for about a year and a half, Jackman became worried about making her house payments as work became difficult and medical bills mounted. “She was worried more about her house than she was her health. I could understand. It was what she could control. What we could control,” said DeJong, who found numerous supporters in Naples and Marco Island to help Jackman and her family make house and health payments.

The Marco community responds with sorrow to the sudden death of one of Marco's first and longest-serving city councilors, Glenn Tucker, who was stricken by a brain aneurysm Sunday. Arrangements for Tucker were announced Tuesday.

He was Mr. Marco, the man with a large stature, who led boldly and held a gift for arguing effectively, while remaining gentle
The life of Marco’s longest-serving city councilman, E. Glenn Tucker, was celebrated Friday evening, just days after many were shocked to learn the news of his passing.
Tucker died about 5 p.m., Sunday of a brain aneurysm. He was 65.
Wife Bonnie Tucker chose to hold the funeral service at the largest Island church, Marco Presbyterian Church, and attendees included government officials, family and friends from all corners of Collier County.
Rev. Thomas McCulley expressed what made the loss of Tucker particularly difficult.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Frantic search for woman who drove into pond ends with tragic discovery
The frantic search for a woman who called 911 as her car was filling with water in a retention pond at the Fiddler's Creek development near Marco Island ended Tuesday with the discovery of her death. Mary J. Catania, 58, of Naples, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, which is conducting an investigation into the crash.
